Colorado Convention Center — Denver
A $300,000 electrical subcontract on a City and County of Denver project, delivered in full. Colpitts Electric was brought on by the electrical prime to meet Denver’s certified participation requirements — and supplied the crew to perform the work.

The situation
Public work in the City and County of Denver carries small business participation requirements. Primes bidding City projects have to show certified participation — and they need subs who are both certified and genuinely capable, because a certified sub who can’t perform costs the prime more than the participation credit is worth.
Colpitts Electric holds City and County of Denver SBE (Small Business Enterprise) certification, and was brought onto the Colorado Convention Center by Weifield Group, the electrical prime, on that basis.
What we did
Colpitts Electric supplied and supervised a six-person crew — four journeyman electricians, one apprentice, and a working foreman — pulling wire across the facility from June through the end of December 2025.
Melissa Colpitts ran the crew on site, coordinating daily with the electrical prime and the general contractor inside a live, high-profile public building.
Certified participation that performs
Colpitts Electric arrives with a licensed Master Electrician running the crew, journeyman electricians who can be turned loose, and a foreman who has held the superintendent seat on commercial jobs. The participation credit comes without a supervision burden.
An apprentice was carried on the crew for the duration — relevant on Colorado public work, where apprenticeship utilization requirements apply to qualifying projects.
The result
The full $300,000 contract was performed and completed on schedule, closing out at the end of December 2025.
Accuracy: this was a subcontract under the electrical prime, not a direct award from the City and County of Denver.

Colorado public projects of $1 million or more must comply with the apprenticeship utilization requirements of C.R.S. §24-92-115, and the contractor has to submit apprenticeship certification for electrical work before the contract is executed. Only apprentices registered with a registered apprenticeship program count toward those requirements.
Colpitts Electric participates in registered apprenticeship program name sponsor / participant number, which means our apprentices attend related classroom instruction and accrue credited hours — and count toward apprenticeship utilization on qualifying public projects.
Verify before publishing: confirm the exact program name, that it is registered with the U.S. DOL Office of Apprenticeship or the Colorado State Apprenticeship Agency, and Colpitts’ standing as a participating employer. Do not claim apprenticeship utilization eligibility on an unregistered training arrangement.

Colpitts Electric holds the electrical permit for a full LED lighting replacement and controls upgrade across a 104,207 sq ft campus at 3800 E Hampden Ave — Cherry Hills Village jurisdiction, Englewood mailing address.

The scope
Removal and replacement of existing lighting throughout the Children’s Ministry, upstairs offices, fellowship hall, staff kitchen, and conference rooms — replaced with new energy-efficient commercial-grade LED fixtures, plus lighting controls and occupancy/vacancy sensors in every applicable room.

How we staffed it
Colpitts Electric self-performs with its own electricians and scaled up with three subcontracted electricians to hold the schedule — six on site, run by a working foreman who is also the licensed Master Electrician named on the permit.
Working around a live congregation
The campus serves a congregation of more than 2,000 and stays in use throughout. Children’s Ministry rooms, offices, the fellowship hall, and the staff kitchen all had to come back online between services and weekday programming — so the work is sequenced room by room rather than shutting the building down.
Materials and code
All fixtures, controls, and sensors are new, commercial-grade, and compliant with applicable electrical and energy codes. Fixture models and control systems are approved by the client before procurement, so nothing gets installed that wasn’t signed off first.
The result
Work commenced in June 2026 on a three-month schedule. The client has continued to add scope beyond the original contract — the clearest signal a commercial client can give.

The 3800 E Hampden Ave campus is a good illustration of why we cover both: the property carries an Englewood mailing address but sits within Cherry Hills Village jurisdiction. Permitting, inspection, and code review follow the jurisdiction, not the mailing address — and knowing which is which before the bid goes out saves everyone a schedule delay.
